Space cadet 101

inul_starfleet_capri_yoga_pants_detailWelcome aboard Ensign Taylor’s Space Cadet blog. Topic of the day is naming a blog, something I did a few hours ago.

Driving to work I wondered whether I should go for an easily googleable, ‘what it says on the tin’ approach? This could have been any of the following:

  • Bipolar, Autism and me
  • Thoughts on reality
  • Sci-fi and geekery
  • Nature is good
  • Man talks bollocks

But then my blog name was chosen for me by my mp3 player. Do you know the band Spiritualized? Seriously, go and listen to their music. It does what it says on the tin. Their singer often dressed as a spaceman – on stage for sure. Possibly on his way to the shops too.

Spacemen are visitors to an alien world. I get that. The best of them, Jean-Luc, James Tiberius, Spock et al, they stand for a better future that I’ve always bought into.

So why not Spaceman? Why Space Cadet? When you talk about the big questions, it doesn’t do to think you have all the answers – that’s how religions and political parties are born. So in honour of Starfleet academy I have decided upon Space Cadet. At this stage I will neither confirm nor deny whether Space Cadet also pertains in any way to my mental state.

So once again, welcome. I hope some of what I write might make you think or make you smile. Maybe we have something in common.

Taylor out.
